Next Week

May 29th, 2009
Parents,
There will be nothing to turn in next Friday. I am sending home some review math pages from throughout the year. Your child can use these for extra practice, but please do not send them back to school. He/she will also bring home the practice math book next week. There will be several blank pages he/she can work on this summer to practice math skills. Second grade is mostly an expansion of first grade skills. Please practice your math facts, telling time, and counting money this summer.
Please continue to read each night. Remember, you can check www.yellowbookroad.com to check for books on your child’s level (GRL).
If your child is reading on a level E-J, it is especially important to make sure the material is right at his/her level to build fluency and confidence. It is wonderful to reread favorite books again and again. Read with your child to ensure he/she is not skipping or substituting words, or leaving off endings (s, ed, ing).
If your child is on K or above, your primary focus should be on comprehension. This summer, try to find some non-fiction books that your child is interested in reading. These are the hardest tests to pass and an area in which students in the US are notoriously low.
I would also suggest keeping a journal to practice writing complete sentences and using good penmanship. We purchased cute ones at Lakeshore last summer, complete with the first grade lines and a place for a picture. My girls loved them and it helped them keep up on their writing skills.
Thank you for all the treats this week! I especially love the sweet notes from you and your child. They mean the world to me and I do keep them!
Each year I make a DVD of pictures and movies for each of the students. Watch for this to come home next week, along with their writing portfolio. I will put both in a large manila envelope and send them home Wednesday or Thursday, depending on our schedule.
Remember that the Fun Run is on Thursday. Your child may wear the Fun Run shirt and gym shorts (any color). If you did not earn a shirt, your child must be in uniform (the PE uniform is fine). You may purchase a shirt for $10 that day until they run out.
Please send the flat people as soon as you receive them. We share a few each day.
Thank you,
Natalie Norman

May 26th- June 5th

May 25th, 2009

We will continue working on double digit addition and subtraction and introduce regrouping.

We will continue with our poetry unit in writer’s workshop. We will also review letter writing skills as we write thank you notes and letters to the kindergartners and second graders.

Reading groups will continue as usual through the end of the week, when all library books are due. Next week we will work more with our basal and student-selected books during reading time.

Monday-Wednesday June 3rd will be full, academic days. For us, the focus will be on our last few unit of inquiry lessons and culminating activities.

Thursday, June 4th is the Fun Run. Our pen pals from the Guadalupe School will join us, which will be very exciting!

The remainder of Thursday will be spent cleaning our classroom and collecting our end of the year items to take home, including a DVD of the year and a book that shows your students’ writing growth in first grade.

Friday, June 5th will be school-wide cleaning and our end of the year party.

***Please do your best to get your child to school each day during the last week. Our culminating activities, including cleaning, are an important part of closing the school year. Taking responsibility for our things and cooperating as a class and school are a part of being a student at Channing Hall. Our closing week is an important time for your child to have closure to the year and have a chance to say goodbye to friends and teachers. We revisit goals and reflect on our learning. It is as important as the first week of school.

Fun Math Game

May 2nd, 2009
Here is a great game I found online for my daughters.
You can change the length of the pipe by clicking the up or down arrow at the top. Ask your child what number he/she is working on and make the pipe that long. Then, they work on making combinations of that number.
Perfect!!!
