Do you have crayons?
Do you have markers?
Do you have colored pencils?
Do you know how to use your computer to make a picture or design?

If the answer is yes to any of these questions then YOU have a chance to design one of the covers for the Channing Hall 2008-2009 Yearbook!

This year our yearbook theme is Passport To The World. We are inviting the students of Channing Hall to have a say in how our yearbook is going to look. We have divided the yearbook covers up into the 4 age groups as follows:

Front Cover: 7th & 8th grades
Back Cover: 5th & 6th grades
Front inside cover: 3rd & 4th grades
Back Inside Cover: Kindergarten & 1st & 2nd grades

Rules:
1. Must be created on an 8 ½ x 11 inch page of plain white paper.
2. Design must be based around this year’s theme Passport To The World, and an IB Attitude.
3. Submit a brief description of your work on a separate piece of paper, including IB Attitude used, title of work, student’s name and grade. Paperclip pages together.
4. Submission MUST be received by January 30, 2009!! No late entries will be accepted!

Top 3 finalists in each group will be voted on by the students of those grades to pick the winning covers! Winners will be announced on February 13, 2009.

Please contact Kendra Frampton with any questions or concerns at kframpton@channinghall.net.

Parents: Please encourage and support your students to complete this project on their own. Any work not created by the student will be disqualified.

Our Busy Week!

December 14th, 2008

This week will be filled with holiday/winter math and language centers. We will be making special gifts for our parents, writing letters to Santa, performing on Wednesday night, and enjoying our holiday party put on by our wonderful room parents on Friday.
Here are a few fun reminders:
Monday- Mrs. Stone will be out. If you are able to lend an extra hand to Mrs. Linford during lunch, I am sure she would appreciate it! Just let me know.
Tuesday- We will be having a full rehearsal for our program. This is an important day to be at school!
Wednesday- Our holiday program in the gym at 6:00. Please be in our classroom by 5:45 in FULL dress (red tops).
Friday- I will be gone (Sarah is getting her tonsils out). Mrs. Stone will be substituting and the students will enjoy the holiday party. ***Please bring your BEE book and all take home books. We will keep these over the break so nothing gets lost.

Barnes and Noble

November 26th, 2008

Last Friday was our school fundraiser at Barnes and Noble. Our students each made one of their writer’s workshop stories into a book. They were very proud to read their stories to an audience. We also recited a few of our poems from our poetry journals.
Great job boys and girls!

Ramadan

November 26th, 2008

Kameron’s grandpa came to teach us about Ramadan. We learned that Ramadan is about prayer and fasting. After 30 days of fasting from sunup to sundown, the people have a three-day feast. Instead of giving gifts, many Muslims make cards. We made cards to give to people we appreciate.

Celebrate

November 26th, 2008

Here we are enjoying chocolate coins that were mysteriously hidden inside our rolls. It was our version of the English birthday tradition of hiding a coin in the cake. Whoever finds the coin will supposedly have a lot of money. We were all very lucky!

Veterans’ Day Assembly

November 26th, 2008

The whole first grade sang, “God Bless the USA” for our Veterans’ Day assembly. The students were SO excited and did a wonderful job.

Quinceaneras

November 19th, 2008

Ms. Diana, our custodian, came to our room and showed us the tiara she wore at her quinceanera. A quinceanera is a birthday party. It is special because it was her 15th birthday. Ms. Diana said to be careful with the tiara. We got to see her special ring with a 15 on it. She wore a pink dress. The girls in her court wore red dresses.

Today is Sierra’s birthday! :) :)

Today was library. If you forgot your books, you need to bring them soon. We will not have library next week because it is a short day next Wednesday due to the Thanksgiving break.

We will be reading our stories at Barnes and Noble on Friday at 4:00.

Please remember book orders are due online this Friday.

Don’t forget your BEE books. :)

Today was Potato Day!

November 12th, 2008

Natalie said, “We got to have bread with a chocolate coin in the middle. In England for their birthdays their moms and dads hide coins in the cake. If you get a coin, it means you will have lots of money when you are older.”

Hope said, “Our whole day was really fun and the part that I liked was recess and lunch because my mom put a roll in my sandwich container and I thought it was a sandwich.”

Olivia said, “We had chocolate coins today in a roll and we had a Swedish fish.” (Shh Olivia!)

Garrett said, “We had lunch.” :)

Gabriela said, “Today we had library. I got a ticket.” :)

Jackson said, “We made a class book. We wrote about our birthday traditions. I put eyes on my vowels.”

Corbin said, “We had a really fun day today.” :)   :)    :)     :)     :)

Needs and Wants Projects

November 10th, 2008

For those of you who aren’t parents…
As a first grade, we just finished a six week unit about needs and wants. We looked at how people in different circumstances meet their needs and how values and culture influence wants. It is one of the best units all year and at the end the kids choose a country and tell how the people there meet their needs. They needed to be able to tell us WHY they eat the food they eat, wear the clothes they wear, and live in a certain type of shelter. It was great. We set it up like a science fair and other classes and parents came through each of the rooms.
Here are some pictures!
